Hundreds of asylum seekers and hopeful migrants have broken out of a holding centre on the Italian island of Lampedusa and marched to the town hall. Bernardino De Rubeis, the island's mayor, said that 700 out of about 1,300 people at the centre walked out on Saturday morning."It is a very tense situation," he said. Police said the group forced open the gates of the camp and marched peacefully to the town centre to protest against their detention.
